About Our Chapter
Welcome to General Sumter Chapter, the oldest and one of the largest DAR chapters in Alabama. Our chapter was organized March 6, 1895, by Harriet Mays Ball. Mrs. Ball's father had the given name of Thomas Sumter, indicating a relationship or admiration of that family for General Thomas Sumter (above right). When the chapter was organized, there were 21 charter members, one of whom was Kate Duncan Smith. During the chapter's history there have been eight State Regents from the chapter, including most recently, Jean W. Vaughan; four Vice Presidents General, and one Honorary Vice President General. Chapter members have also held national and state chairmanships and served on the Board of Trustees of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School. We are located in central Alabama at the foothills of the Appalachians. Birmingham is home to Vulcan (above left), the world-renown Barber Motorsports Park, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and Arlington Antebellum Mansion.
